Whilst in West End we came across this charming old brick building with a clock tower, and it instantly pulled us in. Turns out it was Kurilpa Library, Queensland’s very first purpose built municipal library, proudly standing there since the late 1920s.

Before Kurilpa came along, the site was home to the West End School of Arts. When that era faded, the council stepped in and built something bold for the community - a free public library designed to bring learning to everyone.

And the name? Kurilpa comes from an Indigenous word meaning “place of water rats,” a nod to the traditional landscape of South Brisbane and West End. It’s one of those little details that makes the building feel even more connected to the neighbourhood it serves.

Today, Kurilpa Library stands proudly on the Queensland Heritage Register, still buzzing with readers, kids’ activities, and that unmistakable West End energy. Nearly a century later, it’s still doing exactly what it was built for - bringing people together through stories.
