About Dave & Malou
Every place has a story.
We’re here to uncover it.
We’re Dave and Malou, the storytellers behind The Dave & Malou Channel — a journey of discovery exploring the history, people, places and fascinating details that make our world what it is today.
From forgotten buildings and historic landmarks to remarkable people, local legends and everyday objects with extraordinary pasts, we believe there’s a story waiting to be discovered around every corner. Sometimes it’s a story hiding in an old photograph, buried in a newspaper archive or tucked away in a forgotten document. Other times, it’s waiting to be found right where we stand.
More than just history
Our channel brings together history, travel, fascinating facts and emerging technology to look at the world from a different perspective. We explore the stories behind the places we visit, the things we encounter and the events that have shaped our communities.
While much of our journey begins in Queensland and Australia, our curiosity takes us much further afield. We love uncovering the lesser-known stories that deserve to be remembered, as well as revisiting familiar places to discover what lies beneath the surface.
Research, curiosity and a little detective work
Every story starts with a bit of digging. We search old newspapers, photographs, maps, archives and historical records, following the clues to piece together what happened and how things have changed over time.
We combine modern research techniques and emerging technology with old-fashioned detective work, on-location exploration and, whenever possible, conversations with people who have a personal connection to the stories we share.
Family memories, local knowledge and the small details that rarely make it into history books can add an entirely new dimension to a story. We believe they deserve to be heard.
We also believe getting the details right matters. History is full of fascinating claims, enduring myths and stories that have changed with each retelling. Part of the adventure is separating documented facts from speculation and discovering what the evidence can really tell us.
Bringing the past to life
Technology gives us new ways to explore and present history. Through digital storytelling, visual reconstruction, colourised photographs and AI-assisted creative tools, we look for fresh ways to help people imagine how places and events may have appeared in the past.
These tools are part of our storytelling process, not a replacement for historical research. Where we use creative reconstructions, our aim is to help illustrate the past while respecting the difference between historical evidence and artistic interpretation.
Join us on the journey
The Dave & Malou Channel began as a way to share our travels and our fascination with the history of the places, people and things we encountered. It has grown into an ongoing journey of discovery, fuelled by curiosity and a wonderful community of people who share our interest in the past.
We especially love hearing from readers who recognise a place, remember a building as it once stood, have an old photograph tucked away or know a family story worth sharing. Your memories, knowledge and contributions can help us uncover details we might otherwise miss.
Because history isn’t just about dates and dusty books. It’s about people, places, experiences and the connections that link the past to the present.
So come along for the journey. There’s always another story to uncover.
Dave & Malou — uncovering the stories hiding in plain sight.
