The Story of Dornoch Terrace Bridge - A Hidden Heritage Gem of Brisbane!
Next time you're travelling through West End, spare a thought for the historic Dornoch Terrace Bridge - a bridge that has been quietly serving Brisbane for more than a century!
Built in 1888, this heritage-listed road bridge was constructed to carry Dornoch Terrace across a gully leading down towards the Brisbane River. At the time, West End was growing rapidly, and improved roads were needed to connect residents with the city and surrounding suburbs.
The bridge is notable for its elegant late-19th-century design and is one of Brisbane's surviving examples of early municipal bridge engineering. While thousands of vehicles have crossed it over the decades, many people pass over it without realising they're travelling across a piece of Queensland history.
The bridge has witnessed an incredible transformation of Brisbane - from horse drawn carts and dirt roads to modern traffic and bustling city life. Through it all, it has remained a familiar landmark in one of Brisbane's most character-filled suburbs.
Today, the bridge is protected on the Queensland Heritage Register, helping ensure that future generations can continue to appreciate this fascinating reminder of Brisbane's Victorian-era past.
