The Ipswich City Mall Historical Obelisk, commissioned in 1987 and created by sculptor Tom Farrell, stands as a bold landmark celebrating the grand opening of the original mall. Think of it as a towering, three‑dimensional storybook, capturing slices of Ipswich’s past in solid form. Today, it anchors the heart of the Nicholas Street Precinct, quietly reminding everyone that the city’s history is every bit as dynamic as its future.
If you look closely at the bas-relief panels, you’ll see the story of Ipswich carved right into the stone. It’s packed with local heritage vibes, showing off the city’s evolution from its early days to the bustling hub it is today. It’s the perfect backdrop for a "then and now" selfie while you're exploring the nearby picturesque historical buildings.
Fun fact: this obelisk is a bit of a traveler! Originally located near Brisbane Street, it moved to its current spot to make way for the city’s massive glow-up. Check it out next time you’re grabbing a coffee in Ipswich!
