Take a stroll down to the southern end of Teneriffe (Queensland) and you’re walking through a slice of Brisbane history without even realising it. What’s now a breezy riverwalk was once a bustling industrial zone packed with wool stores, cargo sheds, and hardworking wharves that kept the city moving.
Back in WWII, this quiet stretch of river turned into a strategic hotspot. The U.S. Navy set up a major submarine base right here, with crews, tenders, and submarines coming and going as they supported the Pacific campaign. It was busy, loud, and absolutely vital - a far cry from today’s joggers and dog‑walkers.
As the decades rolled on and river shipping slowed, the old piers and warehouses faded into the background. Some were demolished, others repurposed, and the whole area slowly shifted from industrial grit to riverside charm.
Today, the “south pier” end of Teneriffe is all sunshine, cafés, heritage buildings, and river breezes — but beneath the boardwalks and lattes is a story of ships, submarines, and a whole lot of Queensland history waiting to be rediscovered.
