Step back in time at Mayes Cottage in Kingston!

Ever wondered what life was like in South East Queensland before Wi-Fi, air-con, and supermarkets? If you’re a history buff or just love a good "time capsule" vibe, this hilltop gem is a must-visit.

The Story: From Slab Hut to Success

In 1871, John and Emily Mayes arrived from England with big dreams and a lot of clearing to do. By 1872, they’d built a humble two-room slab hut. As their fruit farming and timber business took off, they upgraded in 1887 to the beautiful timber cottage they named "Pleasant Place."

The best part? The Mayes family called this spot home for 100 years! Because it stayed in the family for so long, the house didn't get "modernized" into oblivion - it’s like they just stepped out for a moment in 1930.

What’s On-Site?

• The 1887 Cottage: Packed with original furniture, photos, and household items. No replicas here—this is the real deal!

• The 1872 Slab Hut: You can still see the original building where it all started. It later served as a buggy shed (the 19th-century version of a garage).

• The Gardens: Walk among mango and citrus trees that were planted by the family over a century ago.

• The View: Perched on a hill, it’s the perfect spot for a picnic with a side of heritage.
