Perched proudly on a rise in Memorial Park, Sylvan Road, Toowong, the Toowong War Memorial has been watching over the suburb since the early 1920s. Built by the townspeople to honour locals who served in World War I, it quickly became a focal point for remembrance and community pride.

This striking monument complete with a tall fluted column, domed top, and a symbolic horse trough was crafted by Andrew Lang Petrie Monumental Works, the same builders behind many of Brisbane’s early memorials. Its marble plaques list 101 names, including several decorated soldiers, making it both a work of art and a deeply personal record of sacrifice.

The memorial sits within Toowong Memorial Park, a heritage‑listed landscape designed by architect George Rae and established around 1922. The park itself was added to the Queensland Heritage Register in 2007, cementing its importance as a cultural and historical landmark for the city.

Today, the Toowong War Memorial remains a beloved gathering point for ANZAC Day services and quiet reflection. It’s a reminder that even in a fast‑growing city, stories of courage and community spirit continue to shape the places we cherish.
