Gloria & Gerard — Teneriffe’s Iconic Sheep Statues!!!
The polished stainless‑steel sheep sculptures Gloria and Gerard stand on the riverside outside one of the old Teneriffe woolstores (Brisbane), right where the wharves once loaded Queensland fleeces onto ships bound for overseas markets. They’re a playful, artistic tribute to the suburb’s wool‑industry past.
The statues depict two sheep patiently staring out to the river with binoculars, as if waiting for the ship that will carry their prized wool away. They sit exactly where wool was once stored, graded, and shipped - a perfect nod to Teneriffe’s industrial heritage.
Their names honour the co‑authors of the bestselling local history book Reflections on New Farm. It’s a sweet, local in‑joke: the writers who documented the area’s past are immortalised as the very sheep that built its economy.
The sculptures are 2 metres tall, made of polished stainless steel, and created by artist Mark Andrews. They overlook the Brisbane River, near Sir Manuel Hornibrook Park, and have become a quirky photo spot for locals and visitors alike.
