Did you know Brisbane went through a massive street name change in the 1930s?

After the Greater Brisbane amalgamation in 1925, the city suddenly had multiple Queen Streets, Albert Streets, and Main Streets scattered across former shires. Total chaos for mail delivery, emergency services, and anyone just trying to get around.

To fix the confusion, the Council launched a huge renaming project. They wanted clearer navigation, fewer duplicates, and a more unified identity for the growing city. They also introduced naming themes: Pioneers, civic leaders, and later even botanical names to give Brisbane a more organised and meaningful street network.

For example:

German Street → Stoneleigh Street Boggo Road (section) → Annerley Road Main Street → River Terrace New Sandgate Road → Sandgate Road Lower Edward Street → Edward Street

It was basically a 1930s version of a citywide rebrand.

Brisbane was modernising fast, and these renamings helped shape the city we know today. Next time you’re wandering around, you might just be walking on a street that once had a completely different identity.
