We stopped off at the North Pine (Petrie, Queensland) School of Arts for a wander through history - the original community hangout long before cafés, cinemas, or group chats were even a twinkle in anyone’s imagination. Built on land purchased from Tom Petrie in 1888–1889, this beautifully crafted timber hall swung open its doors on 28 January 1890 with a full gala celebration that would’ve put modern launch parties to shame.

Stretching an impressive 62 feet and seating around 450 people, it quickly became the beating heart of the North Pine district. For decades, this place was the spot for everything: dances, meetings, lectures, agricultural shows, and probably a few questionable talent acts. Schools of Arts were the 19th‑century version of community centres mixed with libraries mixed with “let’s put on a show,” and North Pine’s was no exception. Locals gathered here to learn, celebrate, debate, and no doubt have a gossip!

Today, the building stands proudly as one of the oldest surviving public structures in the Petrie area, recognised for its cultural significance and recently nominated for the Queensland Heritage Register. Thanks to ongoing conservation efforts, this 1890s gem still tells the story of early North Pine life - a reminder of when the town was young, the railway was new, and community spirit echoed through timber walls.
