We recently took a walk through the Roma Street Parklands to visit the Australian Vietnamese War Memorial at Memorial Corner. Officially unveiled on October 23, 2005, by the Governor of Queensland, this striking monument was created by renowned sculptor Bodo Muche. It features two slightly larger-than-life bronze figures - an Australian infantryman in his iconic jungle greens and a South Vietnamese soldier - standing together in a powerful display of "Brothers in Arms."

The history of the memorial is a testament to the dedicated collaboration between the Australian-Vietnamese Memorial Building Committee, the RSL, and various veteran groups. While Brisbane has several military landmarks, this specific site was established to explicitly recognize the 60,000 Australians who served between 1962 and 1973 alongside their South Vietnamese allies. It ensures that the collective sacrifices and the unique partnership between the two forces are preserved in the public consciousness for future generations.

The purpose of the memorial goes beyond military commemoration; it serves as a vital bridge between communities. With inscriptions in both English and Vietnamese, the black granite plinth offers a space for reflection on mutual respect and gratitude. For many who settled in Queensland following the conflict, the memorial is a significant touchstone that acknowledges their journey and the sanctuary they found here, while honoring those who never made it home.

Set against the lush, peaceful backdrop of the parklands near the "Rats of Tobruk" and "Gallipoli" memorials, the site offers a quiet place for education and remembrance. Whether you are visiting for a specific anniversary or just exploring the heritage of Spring Hill, it is a moving reminder of a partnership forged in difficult times. It’s well worth a stop for anyone interested in the layers of history that shape our local landscape.
