# Toowoomba Railway Station isn’t just a pretty heritage building - it’s the oldest masonry railway station still standing in Queensland, and its story is packed with ambition, drama, and a whole lot…

Toowoomba Railway Station isn’t just a pretty heritage building - it’s the oldest masonry railway station still standing in Queensland, and its story is packed with ambition, drama, and a whole lot of local grit . Back in 1866, the colony planned a grand two‑storey prefabricated station shipped all the way from London. But when the Agra Bank collapsed that same year, the money vanished and the dream station never rose. Instead, a humble timber‑and‑tin building opened with the line in 1867, while the fancy imported structure was quietly sold off piece by piece.

By the 1870s, Toowoomba had outgrown its temporary station, and architect F.D.G. Stanley was called in to design something worthy of the “gateway to the Darling Downs.” The result was the stunning Italianate masonry station completed on 26 October 1874 - the one still standing today. The famous Railway Refreshment Rooms arrived in 1902, becoming one of the last surviving examples of old‑school railway dining in Queensland .

Wander around the site and you’ll find history everywhere. The silky oak Honour Board commemorates 559 railway workers who served in WWI. Two WWII air‑raid shelters still sit on the grounds, built when Brisbane was feared to be a bombing target. The wrought‑iron overbridge added in 1905 once carried pedestrians safely across the tracks before being relocated to Grantham in 1985. And nearby, the massive 1880s Goods Shed has been beautifully restored into a modern event space (2019) - a perfect blend of old and new.

Today, the station is still alive with the rumble of the Westlander heading out to Charleville, but its surroundings are transforming fast. The Toowoomba Railway Parklands PDA is turning 50 hectares of old rail yards into a vibrant urban village with green spaces, homes, and boutique retail - all while keeping this iconic 1874 station at its heart. A past worth celebrating, and a future worth watching .
