The architecture of Holy Family Church in Indooroopilly is one of Brisbane’s most striking surprises. Designed by the innovative Brisbane firm Douglas and Barnes (specifically lead architect Doug Joseph), the building stands as a bold, award-winning example of Australian modernist church design. Its sculptural form immediately sets it apart from traditional parish architecture, a fact recognized in 1963 when it received the Buildings Award from the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.

Constructed between 1961 and 1963, the church showcases pioneering concrete techniques that were daring for the time. The dramatic "pleated" look is created by a folded-plate concrete shell, a structural choice that allows the thin concrete to support its own massive weight while creating an expressive, soaring geometry. Rising from its sloping site on Ward Street, the design symbolizes a "pilgrim’s tent," a concept that still feels fresh and adventurous today.

Inside, the architectural creativity continues with an interior designed to bring the congregation closer to the altar. Soft natural light filters through stunning slab-glass (dalle de verre) windows - thick chunks of colored glass set directly into the structure - creating a serene, almost ethereal atmosphere across the sweeping concrete curves and timber details. It’s a space that feels both monumental and intimate, a rare balance that makes the church a favorite for architecture lovers and curious visitors alike.

If you’d like to admire this modernist gem in person, you’ll find Holy Family Church at 37 Ward Street, Indooroopilly. It was officially opened and blessed on April 28, 1963, and remains absolutely worth a visit - whether you’re into architecture, history, or simply discovering Brisbane’s hidden treasures.
