# Stepping Back in Time: The Margate Theatre

If you’ve ever driven past the corner of Ernest Street and Albert Street in Margate, QLD, then you’ve passed a quiet little landmark with a big local story. Long before binge-watching existed, this was home to the old Margate Theatre, a place where the community gathered for weekend entertainment and a dose of movie magic.

Locals still remember lining up outside for the latest films, clutching coins for tickets and treats, and feeling that unmistakable excitement when the lights dimmed. It wasn’t just a theatre - it was a social hub, a date spot, and a childhood memory factory all rolled into one.

Even though the building no longer echoes with projectors and popcorn chatter, the spirit of those nights lingers. You can almost picture families settling into their seats, kids craning forward from the front row, and friends whispering before the opening credits rolled.

Places like this remind us how much history is tucked into our everyday streets. If you’ve got a memory from the old Margate Theatre, share it - let’s bring those stories back into the spotlight.

Fun Fact: The Grand Finale

The theatre eventually closed its doors in the 1960s, marking the end of an era for Margate locals. In a poetic twist, the final film ever shown was the iconic classic Gone with the Wind - an epic farewell if there ever was one. After standing quietly for a few more years, the building was finally demolished in 1971.
