# Riek Bros Store - Dayboro, Queensland.

The story of the Riek Bros. Store begins around 1900, when local selector Christoph Carl Riek’s sons, Wilhelm and Christoph, commissioned Hans Rohlf and his sons to build them a brand‑new general store in the little settlement then known as Terrors Creek. It quickly became a bustling hub for locals who needed supplies, news, or simply a friendly chat in a town that was still finding its feet. With their sister Annie helping behind the counter, the brothers turned the store into a lifeline for farmers, timber workers, and families scattered throughout the valley.

In 1907, after several busy years serving the growing community, the Riek brothers sold the business to the Silverwood Dairy Factory Company Limited and moved on to Beaudesert, where they opened a new store and continued their entrepreneurial streak. Back in Dayboro, the original building kept evolving. When the English, Scottish & Australian Bank opened a branch there in 1912, a manager’s residence was added, marking the first of several major changes. The final big renovation came in 1936, when the structure was extended right up to the footpath, giving it the street-front presence locals would remember for decades.

As the years rolled on, the E.S. & A. Bank merged with the ANZ Banking Group, and the old Riek Bros. building became an ANZ branch that served the community until the mid‑1990s. Even as the town modernised, the building remained a familiar landmark, a reminder of the early families and businesses that shaped Dayboro’s character. When the bank eventually closed, Pine Rivers Shire Council (now Moreton Bay Regional Council) purchased the building on 30 January 1998, preserving its place in local history.
