# QUEENSLAND’S WEIRDEST WAR: The Day a Moth Saved the State!

Queensland once faced a slow-motion alien invasion. By the 1920s, a "green cancer" was swallowing the state at a rate of 1 million acres per year. The culprit? The Prickly Pear.

It started as a fashion statement. In 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip imported the Opuntia cactus to launch a cochineal dye industry. The goal? Producing the iconic scarlet for British "Red Coat" uniforms.

The dye trade flopped, but the cactus loved the Queensland heat. By the mid-1800s, farmers in Dalby and Chinchilla were using it for "living fences." They didn't realize they were planting the seeds of a 60-million-acre disaster - an infestation the size of the entire United Kingdom.

The Nightmare:
The "pear" was impenetrable. It grew 3 meters high, burying homesteads, killing cattle, and forcing settlers to abandon their land. The government was so desperate they offered a £5,000 reward for a solution. People tried:

Burning it: The cactus just laughed.
Crushing it: Every broken fragment took root and grew into a new plant.
Poisoning it: Arsenic worked, but it was expensive and toxic to the soil.

The Hero:
Enter the Cactoblastis Moth from Argentina. Released in 1925, these "Cactus Assassins" were a miracle. Their larvae bored into the pads and ate the plant from the inside out, turning solid walls of thorns into piles of brown mush in just a few years. It remains the greatest biological control success in history!

Fun Fact: If you’re near Chinchilla, visit the Boonarga Cactoblastis Memorial Hall. It’s likely the only building in the world dedicated to an insect for services rendered to the economy.
