If you love a day trip with a dash of history, The Gantry at Mount Mee is your kind of place. Once the beating heart of a massive timber sawmill, this towering structure dates back to the 1930s and still stands proudly as a reminder of Queensland’s rugged industrial past.

Today, the old gantry shed marks the gateway to the northern section of D’Aguilar National Park and it’s hard not to imagine the clatter of logs and machinery that once filled the air. The sawmill operated right here until 1981, and the skeletal remains of cranes, hoists, and trolleys still give the site its unmistakable character.

But don’t let the industrial history fool you, The Gantry is now one of the region’s most popular picnic spots. Wide grassy areas, towering eucalypts, BBQs, and easy walking tracks make it perfect for families, photographers, and anyone who enjoys a peaceful bush escape.

Random fact: The name “Mount Mee” comes from the Aboriginal word mia-mia, meaning “lookout” - fitting, considering the stunning views and rich cultural history surrounding the area.
