Had one too many last night? Don’t worry - you’re not the first! Back in colonial Australia days, folks had their own “miracle” hangover cures. From greasy bush breakfasts to a cheeky nip of rum, these remedies were more folklore than science… but they sure make for some entertaining history.

1\. Hair of the Dog (Rum or Brandy)

Colonial Australians swore by a morning nip of rum or brandy to “steady the nerves.” It didn’t cure anything, but it kept the party going.

2\. Greasy Bush Breakfast

Think bacon, mutton chops, and fried eggs cooked over a campfire. The belief was that fat “soaked up” the leftover alcohol.

3\. Strong Black Tea or Coffee

Bushmen brewed tea so strong it could “stand up a spoon.” The caffeine kick was thought to clear the fog.

4\. Vinegar & Lemon Tonics

Mixed with water, vinegar or lemon juice was believed to “purify the blood” and refresh the body.

5\. Sweating it Out

Whether chopping wood, riding horses, or working in the sun, colonists believed hard labour would sweat out the excess!

Fun Takeaway

These cures were more about ritual and resilience than science. They tell us a lot about colonial life: reliance on rum, bush food, and sheer grit!!!
