# Ever wondered what the ultimate 1799 "failed" camping trip looked like?

If you’re cruising along Steve Irwin Way at Beerburrum, keep your eyes peeled for the historic stone marker at the Matthew Flinders Rest Area. It commemorates the spot where Lt. Matthew Flinders, his guide Bongaree, and two seamen set up camp by Tibrogargan Creek on the evening of July 25, 1799, during their exploration of what Flinders called "Glass House Bay."

On the morning of July 26, Flinders successfully conquered the 280-meter summit of Mt. Beerburrum. From that vantage point, he finally got a clear look at the surrounding giants, including the massive Mt. Tibrogargan and the jagged Mt. Coonowrin. While he had originally planned to explore further into the range, the view from the top changed his mind. He noted the "almost perpendicular" cliffs and realized the dense scrub and steep rock faces were more than his small party was equipped to handle.

By the morning of July 27, one of history’s greatest navigators decided to call it a day. Looking up at those flat-topped peaks in the morning light, he basically said, "Nope!" and began the trek back to his ship, the Norfolk. It wasn't just the height that deterred him; as a maritime explorer, Flinders knew when to prioritize his primary mission of coastal mapping over a risky vertical climb.

It’s incredible to stand where they stood, imagining the Glass House Mountains before the roads and the crowds. The extract from Flinders’ diary captures a perfectly relatable moment: looking up at a massive challenge and deciding a cozy ship sounded much better than a dangerous scramble. So, next time you’re driving past Beerburrum, give a little nod to Flinders and Bongaree - a great reminder that even the most famous expeditions had their "let's just head back" moments!
