Bribie Island’s marine rescue story goes way back to 1970, when a bunch of passionate locals from the Bribie Island Boating & Fishing Club decided they’d look after anyone who got into strife on the water. What started as neighbours helping neighbours quickly grew into a proper rescue crew with real skills, real gear, and a whole lot of heart.

By the 1980s they’d become Bribie Island Air Sea Rescue, and by 1997 they officially transformed into VMR Bribie Island — the team so many boaties rely on today. From radio watch to late‑night callouts, they’ve spent decades keeping the Pumicestone Passage safe, powered entirely by volunteers who give thousands of hours every year.

And now they’re entering a new chapter as part of Marine Rescue Queensland, bringing their 55‑year legacy into a statewide network while keeping that unmistakable Bribie spirit. Same passion, same community, just an even stronger safety net for everyone who loves being out on the water.
